Installing GTA Mzansi on Android is straightforward once you know the steps — but if you skip one or get the folder path wrong, the game either won't open or will crash immediately. This guide covers everything from enabling unknown sources to placing the OBB file correctly, so you don't waste time troubleshooting.

We've helped thousands of South African players get GTA Mzansi running. These are the exact steps that work, written clearly so anyone can follow them — even if you've never installed an APK before.

What You Need Before You Start

Before you download anything, check these requirements:

  • Android 8.0 or higher — older phones may not support the game properly
  • 2–3 GB free storage — the APK and OBB files combined take around 2–2.5 GB
  • Stable internet for download — once installed, the game is fully offline
  • A file manager app — most Androids have one built in (Files by Google works well)
  • A ZIP extractor — ZArchiver (free on Play Store) is the easiest option

Step 1: Download the GTA Mzansi APK and OBB Files

You need two files — the APK and the OBB data file. Don't just download the APK alone. Without the OBB, the game will install but won't load any content.

Head to our official GTA Mzansi download page and grab both files. Make sure you're on a trusted source — there are a lot of fake GTA Mzansi sites that bundle malware with the download. Ours is safe, verified, and updated regularly.

What you're downloading:

  • APK file (~50–80 MB) — the app installer
  • OBB file (~1.5–2 GB) — the game data (maps, vehicles, audio)

Step 2: Enable Installation from Unknown Sources

By default, Android blocks apps from outside the Play Store. You need to allow this before installing the APK. Don't worry — this is safe to do and you can turn it off afterwards.

Android 8.0 and above:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Go to Apps or Application Manager
  3. Find the browser or file manager you'll use to install the APK (e.g. Chrome, Files)
  4. Tap "Install unknown apps" or "Install from this source"
  5. Toggle it ON

On some phones (Samsung, Xiaomi), this setting is under Settings → Biometrics and Security → Install Unknown Apps.

Step 3: Extract the OBB File

The OBB file usually comes as a .zip or .rar archive. You need to extract it before placing it in the right folder.

  1. Open ZArchiver (or your file manager)
  2. Navigate to your Downloads folder and find the OBB archive
  3. Long-press the file and tap Extract or Extract here
  4. You should get a folder named something like com.NGC.GTAV or similar — do not rename it

Important:

Some downloads come with a password. If prompted, the password is usually shown on the download page or in the description. Check the site you downloaded from — our download page includes the password if one is needed.

Step 4: Move OBB to the Correct Folder

This is the step most people get wrong, which is why the game crashes or gets stuck on the loading screen. The OBB folder must go in a very specific location.

  1. Open your file manager
  2. Navigate to Internal Storage → Android → obb
  3. If an obb folder doesn't exist, create it — spelled exactly obb, all lowercase
  4. Move or copy the extracted OBB folder (e.g. com.NGC.GTAV) into Android/obb/
  5. Do not put it inside any other folder — the path should be: Android/obb/com.NGC.GTAV/

The folder name is case-sensitive. Don't rename it or change any characters.

Step 5: Install the APK

  1. Go to your Downloads folder in the file manager
  2. Tap the GTA Mzansi APK file
  3. If your phone asks "Do you want to install this app?", tap Install
  4. Wait for the installation to complete (usually 30–60 seconds)
  5. When you see "App installed", tap Open or find the game in your app drawer

Step 6: Launch the Game

First launch takes longer than usual — the game loads and verifies the OBB files. This can take 1–3 minutes on the first run. Don't panic and don't close the app.

  1. Open GTA Mzansi from your app drawer
  2. Grant storage permissions if prompted — the game needs this to read OBB files
  3. Wait for the initial loading screen to complete
  4. You should land on the main menu — congratulations, you're in!

Common Errors and How to Fix Them

Error: "App Not Installed"

Causes: Not enough storage, corrupted APK download, or conflicting app already installed.

Fix: Free up storage space, delete the APK and re-download it, and uninstall any previous GTA Mzansi version before installing the new one.

Error: Black Screen on Launch

Causes: OBB file is in the wrong folder, the OBB wasn't fully extracted, or storage permission wasn't granted.

Fix: Double-check the OBB path (Android/obb/com.NGC.GTAV/), make sure the file is fully extracted (not still compressed), and go to Settings → Apps → GTA Mzansi → Permissions and enable Storage.

Error: Game Crashes After Loading Screen

Causes: Device has too little RAM, OBB version doesn't match the APK version, or the download was incomplete.

Fix: Close all background apps before launching, make sure your APK and OBB are from the same version (download both together from the same source), and check that the download completed fully before extracting.

Tips for Best Performance

  • Close background apps before launching — GTA Mzansi is RAM-hungry
  • Lower graphics settings in the game menu if you experience lag
  • Don't use your phone while downloading — incomplete downloads cause corrupt files
  • Keep at least 500 MB free even after installation for game cache
  • Restart your phone before first launch if you've been installing other apps

You're Ready to Play

That's it. Once you've followed all six steps, GTA Mzansi should be running on your Android device. The first session is worth it — driving through a South African township with Amapiano on the radio and a Quantum taxi in front of you is an experience no other mobile game offers.
